Hailing from Geneva, Switzerland STORTREGN's new album "Emptiness Fills the Void" is the perfect balance of Black and Death Metal. The first track "Through the Dark Gates" is beautifully written and a great start to a wonderful album. "Through the Dark Gates" sets the mood for the rest of this epic album. By the time "Circular Infinity" came on my eyes were already rolled into the back of my skull. I couldn't help myself and started headbanging in front of random people, who were probably wondering if I was possessed.
"The Forge" ends up switching it up a bit by adding more blast beats by Samuel Jakube" on drums and a more death metal feel. But the vocals by Romain Negro lean more towards Black Metal. "Nonexistence" is definitely one of my favorite tracks off the album. The guitar work by Johan Smith and Duran Bathija is immaculate throughout the entire album, as well as the great bass work by Manuel Barrios.
"The Chasm of Eternity" slows it down a bit for us with a nice melodic feel. Its perfect to bring you back down and let you cool off for the rest of the album. And then out of nowhere comes "Lawless" with its sheer brutality! By far the song "The Eclipist" is my second favorite track on the album. At the two minute and thirty two second mark you will understand why it is my favorite. If I had six words to describe it they would be "GOD DAMN THIS IS FUCKING EPIC!"
"Shattered Universe" is the second to last song on the album. Absolutely everything about this song is perfect. It is the personification of what Blackened Death Metal should be. "Shattered Universe" had me in a rage. My heart started palpitating, I wanted to throw my computer across the room and set fire to my house.
And for the finale we have "Children of the Obsidian Light", an eleven and a half minute ending to this captivating album. I couldnt ask for a more flawless way to bring it all to an end. In my honest opinion I highly recommend buying "Emptiness Fills the Void" as soon as you can. I promise you will not be dissatisfied. I look forward to hearing more from Stortregn in the future. I believe they can only get better.
