Vilnius, Lithuania based five piece Death Metal band STORMGREY have released their debut album called "Pray. Crawl. Suffer." It sure is a debut to be reckoned with.
The album kicks off with "Fury" and it does that with a killer guitar riff. Of course it's still Death Metal, and you can't understand what the singer's babbling about, but the music makes up for that. I'm nodding at the beat already. At the beginning it's nicely structured, with drums and guitars interchanging the forefront, a little further down the line it gets a bit more chaotic, but it fits.
"Crawl Through Suffer" starts not only with a killer guitar riff, but with a demonizing drumbeat as well. If these know about SLIPKNOT, which surely they will, they have definitely borrowed some of their instrumental sound and energy. In "My Demon" a lot of Thrash influences are audible as well, but thanks to the vocals and the drums the main thing is still Death Metal.
"New Eye" starts a bit slower than the previous songs, but a change of pace is certainly in its place by now. It's the most Death Metal song on the album yet. It's more about atmosphere now, while the other songs were more about power and fast guitar riffs. However, near the middle of the song they speed up again. It was just the small break that was needed to keep things interesting.
The "Rising Waters" intro is played by the bass guitarist, as a warm-up for when all hell breaks loose again. Which it does. And if you thought a song with the title "Dear Jesus" would be mellow and maybe even preachy, you'd be dead wrong. In this one there's actually a guitar solo, which I only just now realize I missed until now.
"Masquerade" is all built around one heck of a guitar riff, which stays prominent throughout the whole song. The nodding sure keeps going on, whether you want to or not. Next up is their band's title track, called "Stormgrey". It doesn't really distinguish itself, so I don't know why they picked this one for it, but there's nothing wrong with it either.
"Smoke That Pot" and "Holy Bitch" are the closing songs on this very fine debut album, and with these efforts the keep going strong until the very end. This band just has to become heard of worldwide.
