Vampires In The Church
St. Madness

At first glance I see ST. MADNESS and I think Black Metal and more than likely from somewhere cold and desolate. However, they are from Arizona where its hot and desolate, and they are a Thrash band; well at least I got the desolate right. Their brand of Thrash will take you back to SLAYER and EXODUS, while still leaving something extra lingering.
Originally they were called CROWN OF THORNS before changing their name to ST. MADNESS. They have been around since 1993 and have released 6 albums. They have also been able to open for SIX FEET UNDER, KING DIAMOND and DESTRUCTION.
The title track is the first that I get to sink my teeth into [get vampires and teeth!!!]. This band I am not really sure what to think of after the first track. They kind of have a Thrash sound, but it is slightly slower or something along those lines. There is definitely a SLAYER presence on this track. I kind of hear an almost bluesy feel to it, which I believe comes from his voice and it is slightly similar to Messiah Marcolin. However on the somewhat opposite side of things Arizona, a dedication to their home state, sounds like it could have come off any BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album. The guitar work and the inflection in the singer's voice both sound quite similar to Zak except during the chorus and then the singer sounds like Neil Flannon from CLUTCH.
Ever After begins like a GODSMACK track particularly like Voodoo. Overall not a very good song at all, then once the song is over I hear something that is a redeeming quality. Is that an actual Thrash riff? Do I hear a little bit of EXODUS? Finally the real Thrash is present on this EPK from Sonicbids. I hear a lot of EXODUS particularly in the guitar tone, and it puts to shame the other tracks on the EPK. I read a small excerpt from their bio that said Carnimetal, which at first read I thought carnage that was till Carl the Clown. The song is pretty standard and not interesting other than the somewhat humorous carnival sounding riff that pops up here and there. Expressionless and Covered In Blood Again are southern tinged bluesy tracks that I just didn't care for either.
Well if you are expecting a Black Metal record because of the corpse paint, you came to the wrong place. If you are expecting a Thrash record because that is what the description says, then you came to the right place about 2/5 of the time. I think these guys are confused about what they are doing exactly musically. I would recommend this to fans of DANZIG and BLS along with fans of CLUTCH.
