Spider God - Fly in the Trap album cover

From their EPK, "Fly In The Trap" dives into the mysteries, the conspiracy theories and the underlying tragedy that surround the story of Elisa Lam, the young woman who struggled with bi-polar disorder and was found dead in the rooftop water tank of her LA hotel in 2013." The album has eight songs.

"The Fifty Second Murderer" is the first. The music is pretty intense out of the gates. It's Melodic Death/Black Metal at its core, with an uncompromising sound. It's a bit hard to discern exactly what is going on since the sound is so much in your face, but the guitar harmonies are on point. "Traces of Hubris" is another very intense offering, but with a bit of melody here and there. The madness outweighs the melody, however, and this is often a struggle that many bands in this genre face. "A Thousand Lonely Spiders" is also quite audible. If the vocalist switched up his style a bit, the music would be more interesting, or amp up the melodies in favor of the chaos.

"The Hermit" is the fourth song that is in your face. Like a thousand nails going through your body at once, you can't pinpoint the pain. It is just all over the place. "Labyrinth of Hallways" is really the first song that doesn't come at you 1000 miles an hour, and embraces some more melodies, although they are somber. Clean vocals are also offered here. "Flies in the Trap" is another intense song that again lets a little melody flow but the raging hated comes through much stronger. "Hiroshima Mon Amour" is a bit slower and the melodies open up a bit but again, the intensity is the main element in their music.

This wasn't a bad album per se, but the fact that they vocals hardly ever varied and melodies were buried in the mix made it hard for me to enjoy. The themes of the album also sounded interesting, but never really came through in any of the music. These songs were just too one-dimensional for me.
