SPELL is a canadian band that defines itself as a Hypnotizing Heavy Metal style, which was something new to me. The guys from the Great White North have recently released their newest album "Opulent Decay" and thats what we are going to talk about.
The opening song from the album is "Psychic Death" and it starts out with a guitar lick that reminded me of Reach Out For The Light by AVANTASIA. The guita ris really good, the vocals and the bass and drums are pretty tight as well. Its a very good song.
"Opulent Decay" is the track the gave its name to the album and it starts out with a beautiful guitar sound and a bass n' drums that will complete the hipnotizing madness. It feels like 70's and sometimes even 60's, but mixed up with na 80's vibe. I loved it. The synthesizer are pretty good helped creating the right ambiance.
"Sibyl Vane" starts out with a cool guitar riff that will make you dance. The tonei s pretty good and the vocals are really amazing. There's some groovy bass lines here and all the melodies are great. The guitar solo is amazing and man... what a great song. "Primrose Path" starts out with a nice guitar lick that is followed by a beautiful solo that completes the heavyness of the bass and drums. The vocal lines from the stanza are pretty good. There's a part where something really Prog hits in and it was definetely the highlight of the song.
"The Iron Wind" starts out with a very good guitar riff, but what caught my attention was the bass sound that is really heavy and has a beautiful tone. I have nothing much to say about this song, just that its a great one. "Dawn Wanderer" starts out with a very nice guitar lick that reminded me of IRON MAIDEN. This song has a nice ballad touch on it and its definetely something that will hipnotize yourself while listening to it. The vocals are powerful and touchful.
"Deceiver" starts out with an incredible guitar sound that creates a powerful ambiance and will make you "fly inside your mind" as soon as it starts. Soon there's some distortion that hits in and the bass reminded me of STEVE HARRIS lines here, which is a very good thing. I'm impressed by those guys! "Ataraxia" starts out with a atmosphere synthesizer sound that is soon joined by some vocal choirs and it feels very epic. Its a very beautiful acapella song and I'm pretty sure that you will love it the way I do.
"Imprisioned By Shadows" starts out with a very cool and Rock N' Roll guitar work and there's a 70's vibe here that will transport you back to that era. The vocals here are more Rock N' Roll and its a fast song as well. The highlight goes to the insane guitar solo.
"Saturn's Riddle" is the song that closes the album and it starts out with a cool bass sound that is followed by some cool guitar work that completed the whole ambiance. The chorus is pretty good and I believe that you will start to sing it as soon as you hear it.
SPELL wrote and released a great Heavy Metal album and they deserve so much more attention from the whole scene. I'm impressed by how these guys were able to write that kind of music that feels like the 70's and 80's these days. I'm hipnotized.
