Spectral Descent - Descending The Astral Plane album cover

With zero intention of using any techniques influenced by present days and with every will to bring the purest and brutal Death Metal Old School, the New Jersey quartet that forms SPECTRAL DESCENT releases their debut album entitled "Descending The Astral Plane". Through Horror Pain Gore Death Productions veteran musicians Brian McGowan (drums), Al Fradella (lead guitar and rhythm guitars), Adam Hood (lead and rhythm guitars), Ian Merrifield (bass, vocals) bring us a primitive sound based on the explosion of Death in the late 1980s and beginning of the 90's, differentiated by the production and mixing of great quality.

The track chosen to introduce listeners to the band's sound was "Devil's Teeth", featuring powerful riffs, astonishing lyrics sung by Ian's ferocious guttural vocal followed by linear drums and bass. For fans of the style like me, it is impossible not to imagine beating head over with a song like that starting a show, or even at home. "Maze Runner" is marked by the similarity with the Death band, bringing, strong riffs, with two little and fast solos after the chorus, this song, also has interesting whispers at the end joining the lead vocal.
"Sun Eater" stands out from the first two songs being my favorite of the whole album. They included on it some guttural treble, just in the chorus, making it bright and staying in our minds for days, after listening to it for two or three times. "Cold Dead Stare" is the shortest track on the album with just over three minutes, and is perhaps the one that most portrays the idolatry of the quartet to the style in Its initial characteristics. Beast blasts, screams, and death itself. "The Gates of Blairsden" is marked by various tempo changes and brings back the vocals to Black Metal style.

"WormWood", the largest song on the album, is about five minutes long. It has a fantastic intro, with lead riffs creeping up to give way to a traditional style. "Spirit Invasion" ends the album being the most aggressive song of the same. Although they are not bringing anything new, which is precisely the intention of the band, "Descending The Astral Plane" is for those listeners who love bands like DEATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE and CARCASS.
