Devoted To Nothingness

Greece has its fair share of rich cultural history and, looking to more recent affairs, we have seen some fine music comeing from the meditteranean country. With the likes of ROTTING CHRIST dominating the nation's attention for Heavy Metal, there is also a strong underground scene on the islands.
Step into the light SORGELIG. Formed in 2017 the band has already amassed a respectable catalogue of releases, pumping through EP's and studio releases like clockwork. Today I will be looking at their 2019 release "Devoted To Nothingness".
The artwork is dark and gloomy, depicting what appears to be the face of a traditional Grecian style statue with the band name, and album title superimposed over a black background. Whiolst this is very simple it tips its hat to the groups country of origin as well as the stylings of their genre.
Opening with "Light Fades Away" it is a disturbing instrumental opening, creating a sense of dread and an unsettling atmosphere, whilst building into "Die In Vain" which continues with this sense of forbodeing throughout. The music blurring together into a wall of sound, and the vocal track almost ethereal, floating along behind.
"The Parasites Of Existence" is a slower and more deliberate track, with a stady driving rhythm that is interspersed with some truly disturbing screams. Whilst marching towards a slow and steady end and the track flows into "H.E.M.E.O.Θ.Σ.". which continues with the more stereotupical stylings of the Black Metal genre, heavy and almost depressing.
Jumping through now to "Devoted To Nothingness" again the pace is slowed right down and the vocal line sounds genuinely pained and troubled, creating a disturbing overall sound. "We Shall Be Forever Blind" is a final and aggressive assault on the listener, with an up tempo pace, blasr beats and overall aggressive tone, I was quite impressed by this track. Finally "Eclipse" is a peaceful way to see out the EP with a slow and relaxing instrumental track that flows serenely until a final gasp.
Overall this was not a very exciting EP, musically it was hard to hear what was really going on, this will be due to a quite frankly poor recording standard, as all the instrumental elements blurred together and cancelled each other out. I feel as though a mistake was made with the last two tracks. If "Eclipse" were before "We Shall Be Forever Blind" I think that there could have been more of a build and a dramatic ending. But that is the beauty of artistic outputs, there is no right or wrong way of doing something, it all depends on what you want to achieve or deliver.
I would like to see what SORGELIG produce next, as I feel that really it was the production value that really let this recording down.
