SOMALI YACHT CLUB is a Stoner/Hard rock trio from Lviv, Ukraine. The band used the name after Somalian pirates that patrol the coastal waters off of Somalia. They started off as a jam band for the members in 2010 before releasing their first EP in 2011 called Sandsongs. In 2014 they released The Sand, their second full length release and now in 2022 the band returns with The Space. People have described the band's style of music as the next step, or the new age of Stoner rock.

The first track off of the EP is "Silver" and starts off with a saddening slow tempo, with a heavy sounding bass and some cool guitar work. This track takes me back to the late 90's when Grunge takes a slower and darker approach. The vocals maintain a mellowness through the song as the bass and guitar stands out over all. "Pulsar" opens up with a catchy bass riff that flows the song into itself and really keeps it up the whole track. This is a bass and drum track for the first three minutes, and continues with that rhythm for most of it, but they work very well together, really keeping the song in motion well. The song opens up shortly after with the instruments pounding away, while Ihor's vocals hold a calmness. The next track is "Obscurum" and has a melancholy feeling to the guitar at the opening, that does eventually give way to a darker element, but still maintains a beauty amongst the darkness. The vocals are made well for this track, and the guitar is very creative throughout.

"Echo of Direction" comes across as one of the more heavy riffs you will hear on the release and packs a punch that you are not expecting. The tempo is fluctuating for this track and is comparable to A PERFECT CIRCLE in writing structure. This is a very creatively pieced together song that registers in at just under ten minutes, but the band uses that time to showcase it's musicianship and talent. The EP finishes up with the twelve minute track "Momentum" and it is a fitting name as the song itself builds and releases at ease. The guitar plays some smooth picking along with sludgy muting riffs as the bass carries along with it, while keeping up a strong rhythm section with the drums and seems to be very heavily influenced by blues. If BLACK SABBATH and PINK FLOYD had a baby, this would be the outcome. The trippy element used to describe their music mostly is shown in this track to me more than the others and helps it stand out above the rest.

This is a solid release and you can sense there is some serious comradery between the artists. The songs are well written and mostly hold a relaxed pace that never seem to be rushed to any degree. Solid bass from Artur can be heard throughout each song with a lot of creative and blues riffs, but he easily digs in and creates a pounding and free flowing tone as he wishes. It definitely keeps true to the Stoner rock vibe but really has a lot more to offer any listener.
