Altitude

Solar Sons

The force is strong with this one.
November 11, 2025

SOLAR SONS are another one of those hard rocking, hardworking bands that rarely get the recognition they deserve. On October 24, 2025, they released their sixth full-length studio album, Altitude. That's right. Six. They formed in 2016, which is actually less than 10 years ago but, as I said, hardworking. Need more evidence? Altitude was tracked in eight days. More? Guitarist and vocalist Rory Lee is also the bassist for KING WITCH. Still need more? Sorry, that's all I got. But, also, suddenly their cover of DEEP PURPLE's "Burn" with KING WITCH in 2023 makes total sense!

So anyway, SOLAR SONS is a Heavy Rock trio from Dundee, Scotland. Some people say Stoner, some Prog, some Doom. With six albums, you're bound to cover a lot of terrain, so let's just keep it at Heavy Rock. And if you're wondering, yes, there is a Dundee in Australia. In fact, there's a Dundee Beach, a Dundee Downs, and a Dundee town all in Australia, but these lads are from the one in Scotland. Thank you, Google.

I haven't heard a lot of SOLAR SONS except for their 2016 debut and the aforementioned DEEP PURPLE cover. I will say, they have come a long way since 2016. If you want the hungry wolf, finding-their-feet version of SOLAR SONS, you can dial back nine years, but I think I'll stay with the 2025 version. I mean, Altitude is a pretty heavy hitting album. Eight tracks, 43 minutes, and a whole hell of a lot of red dbs.

A lot of solid tracks on this album. My favs include the title track, "Altitude," with its bluesy backbone and chunky but groovy riffs. The very next track, "Phoenix" is another fav, especially because of the gorgeous solo. I also really dug the enigmatically titled "O.G." which is two parts bluesy doom and one part funky rocker. Great closer to the album.

The band says the album is about "about friendship, escaping the madness of the city, shaking off the blues, and celebrating the magic of music" and I have to say there's certainly an overarching sense of optimism and goodwill about the album, so no argument there. Promo material says, "the record captures the raw energy and chemistry of the band at their most confident and electrifying." Again, no argument there either. The force is strong with this one.
