Sodomisery - The Great Demise album cover

On May 22, 2020, SODOMISERY released "The Great Demise," their first full-length release. SODOMISERY is from Sweden and was formed in 2015 by Harris Sopovic. His aim was to start a project that perfectly blended death and black metal. "The Great Demise" follows their debut self-titled EP that was released in 2017. That EP was recorded by Harris with support from Johan Fridell, Niklas Sandin, and Pär Johansson. Due to the success of the EP, Harris decided to turn the project into a full-fledged band, with the current lineup finalized in 2018.

The death metal elements in the music are noticeable in the fast pace, high energy drumming, and melodic guitar solos. Meanwhile, the black metal elements in the music are noticeable in the few sections of black metal riffs and blast beats. Guitar riffs tend towards melodic, rather than a rough death metal one or a cold black metal one. The drum and bass tone are good, as are the vocals. Tracks don't differ wildly from each other, as most tracks are some combination of melodic riffs and a middle of the road tempo that flits briefly into fast paced territory.

"Reapers Key" is a good intro track that sets the tone for the rest of the album, with hefty drumming, melodic guitar work, and a memorable chorus. "Into the Cold" and "Sacrifice" continue in a similar vein. Fast drumming mixes with melodic black metal riffs. The middle section of the album is solid. "The Messenger," "In the Void," and "The Great Demise" all have their unique riffs. In comparison to the rest of the songs before, "Until They Burn" is slow and deliberate. The dark and heavy atmosphere is nevertheless still quite melodic. "Arise" offers a strong finish as the album draws to a close, with eerie black metal sound reinforced by fast drumming. "The Abyss" is a soft and shimmery instrumental outro.

Overall, I recommend this album for fans of melodic tinged death and black metal. Though none of the songs gripped me, each one was still good. With time, the goal of creating a fresh blend of death and black metal will be realized.
