SIFTING is a Progressive Metal based in LA, USA. They formed in 2010 after a tragic accident changed the face of lead vocalist Eduardo O Gil's life while living in Venezuela. While gaining fame in Latin America, they supported BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE on their tour in 2011. They toured in support of one of Venezuela's biggest Classic Rock bands and released album "All The Hated" in late 2013. The single "All The Hated" was chosen for the videogame 'Rock Band'. In early 2015, two of the members (Eduardo O Gil and Abelardo Bolano) made the move to LA and quickly re-established themselves. They captured the attention of many highly respected producers. Signing with Eclipse Records in early 2017, SIFTING is now ready to release "Not From Here", available September 29, 2017. The album comes in with ten tracks and a listening time of 50 minutes.
Track one, "Agency of Chaos", opens the album in a form of building chaos. It's heavy bass and light strings bring a sense of anxiety. Add the drums and there is the feeling of a dire need to get away. The spoken piece is not in English, but the power that exists is more than a language. We are being closed in on. The last 30 seconds are beautifully haunting with an ending that sounds somewhat like breaking glass to transition into track two. The transition to "Alone" is a little chaotic, but why wouldn't it be, really? As it smooths out, we get the first signs of what SIFTING's standard sound is like. It comes in with hard hitting drums and a deep thick bass line. The guitars are really good. The vocals are your classic Modern Rock feel; a definite radio ready sound to them. The track is the longest on the album coming in at almost eight minutes. This allows the guys to give the listener a broad idea of their overall sound, transitions, and production. Very nice work here.
Track four and title track "Not From Here" is an instant hooker. If you've haven't been hooked yet, this one should do it. Especially if you like your tracks dripping in atmosphere and Progressive flare. The bass is so, so low. They are the highlight for me, but everything flows impeccably. The vocals are phenomenal. They are a little more Punk, but also has a level of unworldliness to them. The rhythm changes are on point. There is real musicianship here. "Nothing but Us", track seven, comes in with all its Punk glory. You know the kind with lowered music and bursting vocals. All of that quickly fades into a kind of Coastal Rock jam. It is definitely not as hard as the tracks that came before it. The vocals are interesting and guitars have a slide-y feel. The bass is nice but less noticeable. I like how they add the bit of depth to another wise airier and fluid track. They added the 'crowd effect', making it have a deep anthem appeal.
The final track "Gloom" brings the softness factor way up. I love the vocals though, they have a nice range to them, and are almost MOTION CITY SOUNTRACK's Justin Pierre level. The track is very soft with an acoustic atmosphere. The plucking is beyond good. It's hard to create a genuinely good Rock acoustic track. About half way though the track, we get our electric back and with about a minute left an incredible Classic Rock guitar solo. With the addition of the electric, the track has more of a bite, but they still keep it languid. SIFTING's "Not From Here" takes on many roles and genres. There is definitely more to this band and album than just a Progressive sound. While they are highly Progressive, they have elements of Classic Rock, Traditional Metal, Punk, and others riddled within this album. Being so, SIFTING will appeal to many listeners. These guys are radio ready and I imagine we will be hearing much more from them in the future. Give it go.
