Shuulak - Citrinitas album cover

SHUULAK is a Dutch Metal band "whose otherworldly songs explore man's obsession with things that would only destroy him. Unfettered by trends and uncompromising in its pursuit of excellence; their music stands as a testament to the undying power of heavy metal." "Citrinitas" is their third EP, and contains four new tracks.

"The Chosen" leads off the album. It has heavy tones and a thick mid-section. The first verse is a bit dark but the second contains nice harmonic vocals. The chorus is thick and full, and Bastiën really stretches his voice out here. The bridge following the second chorus contains melancholic tones and the song as a whole is really well done. "Altar of Gods" is a little slower in pace, but I like those meaty bass notes in this song. It waxes and wanes, gathering steam for a full strike. The slower, more depressing sound is followed by a nice guitar solo.

"Chaosborn" really hits you hard out of the gate, with a thick and rich guitar riff, and again I can hear the bass notes. Bass guitar often gets lost in the mix in a lot of Metal music, and it's a shame because it isn't just there to support the rhythms. That darkness is still present; a central theme in the album. But those low notes are just bossy. "Citrinitas" is a short, one-minute closing instrumental. It closes the album with atmosphere, clicking with the theme of man's hunger to do great and glorious things, only to see them end in "death and depravity."

According to Wikipedia, Citrinitas, sometimes referred to as xanthosis, is a term given to "yellowness." It is the "yellowing of the lunar consciousness." In alchemical philosophy, citrinitas stood for the dawning of the "solar light" inherent in one's being, and that the reflective "lunar or soul light" was no longer necessary. In the case I believe the album touches on the theme of "yellowing of the lunar consciousness." Yellowing can often refer to "dying" and that fits right in to the band's theme. Man does indeed seem to mess up everything he tries to do well. This is good old-fashioned in-your-face Heavy Metal that is indeed uncompromising.
