SHOTGUN REVOLUTION is a Danish four-piece Rock/Metal band formed in 2010. Their fourth full-length, aptly titled "IV" was independently released on February 5, 2021. This band is a throwback to a large degree, heavily influenced by 80s bands, but with a modern sound and production. Other influences include some 90s and early 2000s as well. This is a group of very good musicians and songwriters, a good combination of skillsets to have when in a band.
The record starts with "Wormwood," a song that actually reminds me of SEVENDUST a little. The riff structure and sound are similar, which makes me smile. The song is a little mellow at times and a serious rocker at others. As a contrast, "Enter The Fire" is a little faster and sleeker, but still rocks out pretty heavy. The rhythm is really catchy and adds a lot of atmosphere to the song.
Jumping down a little, we have "Under The Surface," a song that checks a lot of boxes; cool bass line that comes out front, drums that hold a solid tempo and guitars that go from lead to background, vocals that range from throaty to almost belting. It's a really good mix that shows this band is adept at multiple sounds.
"Claustrophobia" and "The Fall" both have really nice guitar riffs and killer rhythm sections. "Claustrophobia" is the heavier song, but both have their own charm. There is more of the use of vocals with just a bass and drum line underneath that supports the lower range of the vocalist, acting as a prop to show off this tone. It works. The pairing of those instruments just fit well together.
To me, the best song on this record is "Black Angel." I love the bass line intro and the guitar riff that just trudges along. The chorus has a nice tempo and tone shift. This is the best example of the SHOTGUN REVOLUTION overall sound. The bridge is really nice with another tempo shift that keeps the song feeling fresh and even has a nice sludgy tone to it.
There is a lot to like about this band. They are first-rate with their instruments. The vocalist has a good range and can vary tone, timber and pitch. The guitarist is really good. His transitions are smooth and well-timed. The bass guitarist is a powerhouse, holding the rhythm when needed and shadowing the vocalist at other times. The drummer goes from slower rhythms to more complex patterns effortlessly.
Next, the songwriting and production are on point. The songs have good, memorable parts that get stuck in the head like any good earworm, making you hum the tune an hour after the record ends. The production and mix are good. The songs are well-timed and have a really good flow. After listening to this record for the better part of a week straight, I can say that I have become a fan.
