On Shoulders of Giants
Seventh Station
From Bandcamp, “On Shoulders of Giants” is a daring polystylistic work by this Slovenian, Turkish, and Israeli progressive entity, exemplifying another step ahead in their aesthetic aspiration. Rejecting a contagious climate of separationism, this EP is led by the motivation to pioneer in crafting a free-thinking art-metal, defying a reality of sustainable war, immutable radicalism, attention-based economy, and conformist collectivism. Reimagining works of classical composers who were known as nonconformists and freethinkers, SEVENTH STATION quotes all with an artistically colorful twist into contemporary metal as a medium, along with the spirit of the underground scene as an artistic resistance, and the music itself as an opposite to the disposable culture of the instant.”
The album has five songs, and “Three Days in Dresden” is first. It’s a colorful song, full of staccato riffs and drums and animated bass notes, and it takes a circuitous path. Some of the melodies are a bit hard to grasp however. “Seid nüchtern und wachet... : VII. Es geschah” is darker and deeper, and the first song with vocals. It’s pretty evident now that this is very personal music, and definitely outside of the box. It’s Progressive in the sense that it expands on the boundaries of a genre by combining influences from various cultures and styles, but it’s not too easy on the ears. “Tropical Limbo” does have some island feelings to it, especially with the xylophone notes. The song is again quite odd…it almost sounds like circus music in some passages. The band is talented, no doubt about that, but this is strange music.
“Melodia Sentimental” is more tender, and straightforward. The acoustic guitars and vocals take you to the past, when life was simpler, but you didn’t realize it at the time, and that is one of the great mysteries of life. “Nagasaki Kisses” might show the band at its best…uncommon timing meters, excellent musicianship, and some of the hard and dark heapings of Metal music. Although their musicianship is nothing less than fantastic, they created an album that is hard to take in and assimilate, and perhaps hard to identify with, at least for me. As a consumer, I am always looking for an uncommon sound, and the next great band. This album is about as unusual as it gets, and I would encourage you to listen to it and make up your own mind.
