Love

Seeds of Mary

The Alternative elements slightly outweigh the Progressive ones, but there are other more subtle things going on as well, like some Punk influence and Psychedelica. One thing that you can’t fault the band for is their grand sense of adventure. Admittedly, this album is very hard to pigeon hole, therefore it will appeal to a wide variety of music fans.

From Bandcamp, “SEEDS OF MARY plant and harvest without getting overwhelmed by musical trends. Their sound - violent, ethereal and yet difficult to partition – is always trying to make the best of their numerous influences. With introspective lyrics and affirmation of emotions, these bad seeds grow fast and strong as their forthcoming album “Love” can attest.” “Amor Fati” is the first track, and I heard an uncommon combination of Alternative music with Progressive leanings. There are vocal harmonies and gentle moments, but the backbone of the song is the anger that lashes out at just the right time.

“New Anger” comes out of the gates with a violent sound at the title suggests, and I pick up on some Groove and more Alternative elements as well. The chorus is gentler and smooth, while the verses border on chaotic. “Parasite Paradise” moved with a discernable swing. The backbone of the song is still hard, but they let the melodic and emotional sounds shine here more. The music is in a constant shifting motion, so it keeps the listener guessing. “Spiral Me Down” is a psychedelic journey into the recesses of your mind that you don’t often visit, and a heavy bass line leads the charge of guitars. The melodies are carefully woven as well but easy on the ears.

“Insomnia” is of course an inability to sleep. Aptly enough, the song has a dreamy sound, especially in the vocal harmonies, but it segues into a rapped cadence after the half-way mark before returning. “Fire is Bright, Fire is Clean” is a celebration of out hot and damaging friend. The music is dark and thick at times as the flames lick upward, and cooler at other times as it smolders. This might be the best and most mysterious sound on the album. “The Narcissist” has a dissonant riff but clean vocal harmonies, and the chorus is sticky, with the meaty thump of bas guitar. “LOVE” closes the album, and it has some funky electronic elements along with another catchy chorus.

For me, the Alternative elements slightly outweigh the Progressive ones, but there are other more subtle things going on as well, like some Punk influence and Psychedelica. One thing that you can’t fault the band for is their grand sense of adventure. Admittedly, this album is very hard to pigeon hole, therefore it will appeal to a wide variety of music fans.
