Dark and dreary, a bastion of unfounded resolve, such is the soundscape expertly and intrinsically carved by newcomers SCULPTOR whose debut delivers unto the world stalwarts of crippling power. Untold Secrets explores the darkened avenues of the human condition using Melodic Death Metal as the medium to paint a desolate theme.
The album opens up with the curiously titled, "Interlude," a title usually set between halves of an album in this instance sets the theming for the entirety of the tracks as that of depressive, melancholic, and disparaging using only the progression of the instruments. "No Control" continues the somber tone of its predecessor with the addition of livelier drums and a gritty vocal progression; the song as a whole brings to mind the feelings of loss and helplessness set to the raw emotive of rage and indignation, all without any mention of any polemical topic. "Beyond Madness" opens in a much more traditional manner forgoing the complexities of Death Metal for something more akin to Heavy Metal-through and through the song keeps to the overarching theme both in topic and melody even managing to incorporate a lo-fi keyboard to the mix. "Embrace Yourself" detracts from the common build of its neighboring tracks and instead focuses on a slower and much more heavy draw bringing the listener's attention to the haunting verses and heavy progression. The clean vocals are themself sound out almost as a defiance to the rest of the album marking this slow piece as more of an interlude, and a powerful one at that. "Untouchable Truth" begins more in a traditional sense of Melodic Death Metal with lo-fi guitars, heavy drums, and a rhythm-lead blend tracked to hard hitting beats; the gang vocals in the chorus are quite haunting however what really takes the cake is the interlude leading to the outro with its blend of clean and jarring its one of the most memorable pieces of the entire album. "Watch Rope," the final track on the album, is a heavy hitting monstrosity strewn between aggression and melody, a paragon of the band's sound and an inspiring track to end on.
The intensity of the sound is a force that rends the listener first taking them by surprise then making them ask for more as the album ends on ambiance. The guitars on the album are forceful by nature and recorded to consist of a full-body sound however recorded superbly enough that each one is near indistinguishable from the other until they diverge into playing separate riffs. The bass is a deep and powerful sound incredibly deep and forceful as it has to make up for the full sound the guitars already have doing so without any hesitation. The drums are quite well balanced with the rest of the instruments providing enough substance to lay down the percussive rhythms without bleeding into or overpowering the strings or vocals. And the vocals themselves are quite impressive as every track contains a different approach whose style and approach was chosen specifically for that track where any other kind would've sounded off or jarring.
Overall Untold Secrets is a powerful piece that serves as a great introduction for the band making their name known on a global scale. For anyone with a penchant towards Melodic Death Metal most are sure to find a favoritism with the band and for others the album serves as a good exordium to the genre.
