German powerhouse band, SCORPIONS, released their nineteenth studio album on February 25, 2022. "Rock Believer" was issued on Vertigo Records and was the first new album in seven years. This record is proof that SCORPIONS are still on top of their game. There are no surprises here, just classic rock done as only this iconic band can.

The first couple of songs are in the vein of "Can't Live Without You" from Blackout. Both "Gas in The Tank" and "Roots In My Boots" have great guitar hooks and solid rhythms. Klaus Meine has one of the most recognizable voices in the music industry. These are two songs that will take you back in time to the hits of the past. Gritty, with a lot of attitude and great tempo, these tunes are easy to get behind. Each has an easy to chant chorus and killer guitar solos. Absolutely what you have come to expect from this band.

Two songs that channel different SCORPIONS styles are "Shining of Your Soul" and "Seventh Sun." "Shining Of Your Soul" the power ballad start and the late-70s feel with a bit of a reggae rhythm in the verses and a harder edged riff for the chorus. Think "Loving You Sunday Morning." "Seventh Sun" is more along the lines of "The Zoo." These are not copycat songs by any means, it's just that these guys have so much previous material that they have different distinct sounds. And I for one am grateful for that.

For the faster, harder rock end of things, head for "When I Lay My Bones to Rest." The guitars are heavier and the tempo more frenzied. Matthias and Rudolph have both really shown off their skills on the whole album. Here, Mikkey Dee gets to shine a bit. This is one of the songs where he gets to let loose a bit and find a faster groove. Having listened to his drumming since his time with KING DIAMOND, it is good to hear he still is one of the masters of not just a solid rhythm, but also can still really pound out a killer groove.

"When You Know" is another power ballad style song; so much so that it gets both an electric and acoustic treatment for this disc. Both versions are pure SCORPIONS power ballad. The bluesy undertones in the electric version are such a classic sound. The dual guitar work, both together and individually through the solos is exquisite. Those two have worked together for almost 45 years. They know how to fit in together and create something magnificent.

This is nothing less than a rock-solid new SCORPIONS album. They have everything you want to hear. Arena anthems, power ballads, and hard rock staples are on full display here. The guitars are pure poetry, the rhythms on point. Klaus is still one of the most melodic and stable singers in music today. In a world that continues to reel from global issues like a pandemic, supply chain disruptions and war, this is a safe haven amidst the chaos. A pair of headphones and this record can help you escape the turmoil and just breathe for a short bit.

Like many classic bands, SCORPIONS do not stray too far from the sound that made them famous. We would wonder what in the world they were doing if they did try something new this far into their storied career. We love SCORPIONS for their signature sound. I for one hope they never change and never stop. Going on decade number six, they are as strong now as they ever were. Please keep doing exactly what you are doing, gentlemen!
