Brægn Hæft

Sarlic Bliss

There could have been more diversity in the band’s sound...this is possible even in Doom. This album was good, but next time, I dare the band to take a few more risks. It will be worth it, and the fans will still be there.

From their EPK, “The present debut is dark, brute and poignant at the same time. Both the recordings and the production were done by the band themselves. "Brægn Hæft" is not least therefore an album as if from a single mold on which the band has portrayed and realized itself without compromise.” The album has six songs.

“Darkest Desire” is first. Somber piano notes and clean vocals lead off the song, and it transitions to harsh vocals, while the Doom gets worse and worse. Gutturals follow, with a full assault of guitars and drums, but the Doom returns at the end. “Lust” begins with strings and clean vocals, but that Doomy sound still dominates. Gutturals follow again, but the best part of the song are the clean vocal harmonies for me. “Flotian Swefn” has another somber piano and string opening, and so far, the songs are quite similar to one another.

“The Truth Within” has some sonic differences, like the deep and sturdy riff and gutturals out of the gate. This song has some ominous qualities in the music as well. “Invidia” has a similar entrance to the first three songs. The desperation is high and the laments strong, but there is not much diversity on the album. “Departed Grace” closes the album. It has some more ominous qualities, almost as if the world is ending, and the clean vocal duet with male and female voices quantifies this. The gutturals might be the best part of the song however.

Overall, I liked the album, and found it to be a good representation of the Doom Metal genre. But there could have been more diversity in the band’s sound...this is possible even in Doom. This album was good, but next time, I dare the band to take a few more risks. It will be worth it, and the fans will still be there.
