Mossbane Lantern
Sallow Moth

From Bandcamp, “But what exactly is a mossbane lantern, depicted on Jacob Devlin's beautiful cover painting? "It's a powerful, green-encrusted lantern hidden on an icy plane," Brents explains. "It's a highly coveted artifact which allows humans to temporarily displace their corporeal form and teleport short distances within the plane they are on, while granting non-humans the ability to teleport over greater distances, including inter-dimensional travel. Each song depicts a story of a different traveler's experiences on their unique path to the “Mossbane Lantern,” as well as the aftereffects of activating it in conjunction with these other artifacts."
The album has nine songs, and “Gutscape Navigator” is first. The vocals are so guttural that they sound like crickets. From there, they vary a bit, sometimes screams, other times even clean, and the band experiments with other things besides straight Death Metal, including some Jazz and some Groove.”Icegorger Gaunlets” is a much faster spring burning so hot it leaves smoke and ashes behind in its wake. The rapid fire of the drumming and start and stop riffing are a technical feat. “Psionic Battery” begins with some clean guitar tones, and some animated bass work. There is even a bit of melody presented within the madness, although admittedly, it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
“Aethercave Boots” is another very dense and thick offering featuring many guitar tendencies of the genre…palm muting, fast picked sections, and some lead breaks that follow a classical scale. The song is also frightening at times. “Parasite Orb’s Lock” has a pedal to the metal approach but is so varied in scope. Some call this Progressive Metal, and I would have to agree, although the technical elements are most pronounced. “Runemilk Amulet” is a bit of an anomaly on the album, as it embraces melody more than any of the other tracks. For me, it proves that the band has a wide songwriting hand but just chooses the hardened angles over the smooth passages. “Parasite Orb (Chipped Topaz)” is the final song, and it has a wonderful keyboard melody, further distancing itself from their many peers.
This album was definitely a collection of out of the box songwriting. Their musicianship is off the charts…somewhere deep in the pacific. Much of the music was razor sharp, cold, even sterile, but there were moments when the album breathed. This was a technical feat that you rarely come across anymore.
