RYDERS CREED is a four-piece band hailing from the English Midlands. They are most closely associated with the "New Wave OF Classic Rock" movement, which includes bands such as THE BLACK BULLETS, ANIMAL DRIVE, and RIVAL SONS. In reality, I find the band reminds me of another English group from the mid to late eighties, called THE MISSION.
"Lost Souls" is the group's second release, and the much-anticipated follow-up to their 2018 self-titled debut. This record finds the group at the top of their form; and features eleven tightly structured and expertly crafted songs sure to warm the hearts of Heavy Rock fans everywhere. The album has a darker feel to it, less straight-forward and more complex (musically speaking) than the debut; and is as lyrically and vocally powerful as anything I have heard this year.
The album's first track, "Memories", wastes little time getting us hooked. The sweet, riffy intro leads us into a heavy, yet somewhat subdued, verse which accentuates the lyrical complexity these guys bring to the table. Anthony's vocal power is also on full display, and his range and ability are both incredible. This band is extremely gifted, all the way around. The guitar solo is perfectly placed and executed, and the bottom end resonates; laying a dark and foreboding background. The song also features a nice false stop ending, which is a very nice touch.
"Unleashed", which follows, is a continuation of the powerful ability within. Everything about the song works to the ultimate power. It is heavier than its predecessor, and not one ounce of the phenomenal energy is wasted.
Where the band really starts to set themselves apart is with the six-minute epic "Lost Soul". The song is a multi-faceted semi-ballad, switching between moments that are heavy as hell to softer refrains throughout. Myles Cooper's guitar work on this track is amazing as well; as he plays off of Anthony's vocal as if they were an extension of each other. "New Beginnings" follows; and is a two-minute guitar/bass instrumental, leading into the ballad "Believer", which features some great lyrical content, and more expected musical badassery. Three songs here check in at over six minutes, but they always seemed to leave me wanting more.
I have no doubt that I will be hearing much more from this band. In the meantime, I'll sit back and enjoy this masterful exhibition of their ability.
