Who's Robert Berry? If you want only one source, let's say he was the vocalist for 90s/00s supergroup ALLIANCE, along with NIGHT RANGER keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald and Sammy Hagar/BOSTON guitarist Gary Pihl and Sammy Hagar/ICON drummer David Lauser. Furthermore, Berry was a member in Pomp Rock masters HUSH and Keith Emerson's 3 project. Not to forget, Berry joined GTR (another supergroup, featuring ASIA, YES and GENESIS members) on a 'late enough for a second album' stage.
He's already released a couple (or more) of solo albums in the melodic Rock field, and - as expected - his newest work, entitled The Dividing Line, will be out via the Frontiers label in early December. The album is well-written in general, even if tracks like the same-titled one, Wait and Life Is On Fire (particularly the latter duo) do not seem to fit in general to the rest of the tracklist's atmosphere. Well, vintage melodic Rock/AOR/American Rock with a fresh sound is the deal here, in the FOREIGNER/JOURNEY/REO SPEEDWAGON patterns (similarities to GIANT's style may you bring to mind, too). Many tunes have this 'night drive' rockin' groove and a couple of them are really exciting (Listen To The People, A Life Worth Livin'), but the overall experience is quite predictable and not that 'heavy'.
Berry's voice is quite clean, distinct and experienced with a dynamic warmth plus a conscious American 'arena Rock' possibility. He means business with The Dividing Line and his Lou Gramm/John Waite/Dan Huff style shall not leave you uninterested, if you're a fan of melody by any means. Still, in a typhoon of such releases you should really have a really strong wallet to buy this one, too. Hence, the grade. Else, add one point.
