Psycho Village - Unstoppable album cover

PSYCHO VILLAGE is a Rock band from Vienna, Austria. Their sound bounces between Alternative College Rock and Heavy guitars, with some Electronic embellishments. This particular record has outstanding production and top-notch artwork. Every instrument sounds right at the spot, kudos to the engineer.

Unfortunately, Daniel Kremsner's vocal timbre doesn´t move me, and with that in mind, I find this first listening not enjoyable. Even the flawless production and robust performance from the rest of the band, can´t help deviate my attention from the vocals.

The opening tunes "Chasing the Sun" and "What was that" have memorable radio hooks, proficient instrumental back up, but as I mentioned, the vocal department is not my cup of tea. The same happens with "Shine on Us." Although I consider myself an open-mind listener and bands like MANIC STREET PREACHERS, HIM and THE STONE ROSES (quite influential here) ARE my cup of tea, can´t feel some empathy with this offering.

"Unstoppable" has an intense drumming track; love the cymbals, the micing of the snare, plus, the electronic sounds give a kitsch aura to the tune. "Broken Hearted" has a SAVAGE GARDEN touch and a nice build-up to crescendo dynamic. I think Daniel´s voice fits comfortably here. So far, this is the best composition of the record. "Half Caste Symphony" pushes the heavy envelope a little bit more with satisfying results. But it never hits the stellar category.

"It's Okay" was unexpected, what a precious gem it is, the vocals sound convincing, full of emotion, nicely pitched. Angelical arrangements, and yes, the bands goes total volume at the end; dynamics are the law here. At this point I´m asking why they don't go all the way like this, because they are not a hard rock band, but they can deliver splendid Beatlesque material. In this genre lies their strength. I may add that this song has some elements of another sublime offering; MSP´s "Tsunami"

"Without You" and "Can't you see" close this eclectic collection with some hints of DEPECHE MODE and SMASHING PUMPKINS, and I´m already missing their softer side.
