Nachtmusik
Poltergeist
Poltergeist are from Calgary Canada who have signed with independent label Bad Omen Records to release their debut album “Nachtmusik” who have bands such as Watch Hazel and Satan's Satyrs on their roster. Poltergeist describe their sound as a mix between post punk and traditional metal. Kalen Baker's influences include Angel Witch. Blue Oyster Cult ,also gothic new wave with the likes of Sisters Of Mercy. The Sound and My Bloody Valentine.
After the intro “ Einfurung” which starts this album “Burning Sword” is a really catchy track with catchy melodies and lyrics which you can't help but tap your feet or dance to, ”Ethereal Nightmare” certainly has that 80's gothic feel a prominent bassline, metallic guitars with distortion near the end of the track, Kalen Baker's vocals are charismatic ,have attitude and a very distinctive fitting the mood and melody of the album really well, ”Cold In September” is more sombre sounding track deep bass groove with some nice guitar touches & synth work, with that underground roots sound. ”Yesterday Fades” sounds heavier than the previous tracks heavier riffs ,rhythm and melody with some great vocals, along with “Children Of The Night” a heavier edge two album highlights wedged in between is the title track “Nachtmusik” the tile track a superb instrumental full of synths & prominent guitars adding suspense and atmosphere. ”Will We Ever Live Again” track 9 picks up the pace from the previous track track 8 “Swallowed By The Ocean” which is the weakest track on the album its OK but lacks the quality and depth compared to the other tracks. ”Walking Alone” again shows them influences which shine through in this track, which I can't help but transport myself back to the best decade for the music the 80's! Very new wave, gothic sounds so cool.” Dammerung” an outro which is another instrumental slowing down, like a warping effect ends the album.
This was some different for me in terms of music genre, one that I enjoyed, it was a change from my usual choice of go to music. Poltergeist “Nachtmusik” on the whole is a great album and listen. It reminded me as I have said of new wave & gothic, dark side of the 80;s style with modern touches which in 2024 Poltergeist have made it sound cool, fresh and current. This band have great potential ,a solid debut release, an album worth checking out for sure.
