Phantoms Of The Future are a German rock band who were formed in Dortmund in 1986 by Sir Hannes Smith. The original line up consisted of Sir Hannes Smith (Vocals),Dirk "Dr, Krid" Schwarzer (Guitar),Dorfel (Bass) and Harald Uri (Drums).Phantoms Of The Future were well known for their blend of punk, rock & later some electronic elements, during the 90's the band released several albums which included "Cruel Times" and "Call Of The Wild" the band disbanded in 2001.Now 25 years later with a new line up Sir Hannes Smith revived the band with a new line up to record new material, hence the new album offering "Forever Dark".

I gave this album a few listens, and in all honesty I found it hard to get into & gain a musical connection with. The opening track "Werewolf" is moody,it's dark & dramatic, very new wave with some heavier moments & synth touches.A majority of the tracks mixes electronica style music, with alternative rock "Spirit Of Love" is a quite punchy melody, but vocally it's too on the theatrical side.As the album progresses  it's just more of the same style new wave tracks lots of experimentive sampling mixed with dark gothic rock which is a bit too over indulgent for my taste. There is a lot of diversity and stylistic shifts on "Forever Dark" the title track has a hooky bassline, there is  heavy parts of the track with some heavy riffing and rhythm which i would love to hear a full track in this direction,"Forbidden Fruits" comes close to my request, but there is some synth programming passages in places that puts an end to my hope. However this is one of the stronger tracks on the album."Stocking Girl" is another track which is a stronger offering, with a punky style sound, the track is quite effective, which works with Sir Hannes Smith's unique vocals."I Don't Believe" is a moody subdued, dark & moody gothic ballad, which builds to a theatrical climax."Feel The Rain" closes the album with a wave of synths & programming.

To comeback after a 25 year hiatus I have a lot of respect for. Phantoms Of The Future are good at what they do with their unique style and diversity.Sadly I think this is an acquired taste musically and vocally, which unfortunately is one that isn't for me."Forever Dark" was a very hard listen for me personally, but I'm sure fans of the band will love it and embrace the bands return.
