Pentagram - Curious Volume album cover

Right from the first bars of this album, you know you're in for a blast. This band has been relatively unknown to some extent, but due to people who wanted to help this bands story be told, they have now become somewhat of a cult band. Now seen as originators, they started their craft in the infancy of metal and now have 40 years of legacy. The group has gone through all sorts of turmoil and some are in shock that they are still able to release music, but thanks to a few people with faith, this release has been completed and bought forth for us to enjoy. Having watched the documentary about this band, I was dead keen to see whether they could still put together some classic metal for which they are best known.

This is solid old school classic metal with riffs and vocal lines taking you back to a time when BLACK SABBATH were starting out and breaking down the walls.

Bobby Liebling is in fine form; his voice sounding more solid and strong than ever. "Dead Bury Dead" shows Victor Griffin smashing out chords that even Tony Iommi would be proud of.

"Earth Flight" is a great rocker that gets the body moving and showcasing the great meld of Blues and Rock that was the fusion that created Heavy metal right from the beginning.

The title track "Curious Volume" is another piece that just sits there and charms you with its grungy guitar and lead work that shows you what great music should sound like.

"Misunderstood" is another rocker that brings them into the now and sums up a lot about the band. It comes close to being my favourite for the album, but after a few listens, I'm still struggling to put my finger on one definite favourite.

"Close the casket" is another gem which showcases Victor Griffins fantastic guitar playing. If you're not a fan by the end of this record, I would be very surprised, as in my opinion, this is one of my picks for album of the year.

"Curious Volume" is a great collection of tunes that matches any of their previous material and shows that with age and practise there also comes maturity and skill to create great music. If you're a fan from the past, then you're going to love this album and if you are a new convert like me having seen the documentary, then you will be very well pleased with what they have accomplished with this album.<
