Even though some metallers may not be excited by this band, PELICAN has always been a stable and trustworthy act that managed to claim its own place in the music pantheon with albums like Australasia and The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw. Their new album is something many people were waiting for and here I am to present it to you...
2009 was a pretty busy year for the US quartet since they released this album, as well as a split CD and an EP. Fans of the band kind of knew what to expect, except for one small surprise that I never thought PELICAN would do. If you take a closer look at the guest musicians of this album, who are people like ISIS' Turner, SUN O)))'s Greg Anderson and more, you will realize that Allen Epley from LIFE AND TIMES lending a hand, or to be more precise, a throat.
I never expected to listen to a track with vocals from PELICAN, since this band was always an instrumental act. Not that the result is bad, not at all! Anyway, PELICAN's Post Rock/Hardcore music is here for one more time to travel you to unexplored landscapes. The enchanting guitars, the trippy rhythm section and their somehow psychedelic Stoner influences get mixed up for the creation of this really beautiful little creature called What We All Come To Need. The band will never release a brutal attack, speed up its music, or perform any ultra-amazing breaks, but it will manage to create an imposing sound that will paralyze you and drag you wherever its masters want.
I don't know if it is called Post, Drone, Sludge or whatever. What I know is that I have really fallen in love with this record and I won't let anyone get it out of my CD player, at least not for the next few days. Man, I still can't figure out how this band manages to sound extremely heavy, yet peacefully calm at the same time.
