Songs Of Hiraeth
Panopticon

"Songs Of Hiraeth" is the album that never happened. The songs were written between 2009 and 2011 .All of these songs were written and recorded from 2009 to 2011. "During this time period, I wrote a lot of music. Bek and I were traveling a lot…I was new to traveling outside of the country, and so seeing Northern Europe for the first time impacted me greatly. We were in our twenties, no kids, no real responsibilities… just working our jobs and being around our community… and with what money we could save, we traveled. Just the two of us. Typically in remote places in the north of the USA, or in Northern Europe. It was the first time I had experienced those eco systems, and it had a profound effect on me and the kind of music I was writing" as quoted by Austin Linn source Band Camp page.
"The Road To Bergen" which opens this album is a ten minute plus moody ,subdued feel with some atmospheric parts to the track, with occasional guitar riffs and whispering vocals."From Bergen To Jotunheimen" seems like it is a continuation of the opening track but has a heavier tone, more the usual Black Metal sound which begins with a cascade of hard hitting drums, guitar runs and some growling aggressive vocals in the background. Again a very long track clocking in just under eleven minutes, for me personally is a tad too long and monotonous. Next Up "The White Mountain View" which is the single release from the album which has some more mellow vocals in parts, but for the majority the vocals are a more aggressive, growling tone backed with some heavy musical passages."Haunted America" is a full on Metal onslaught with some distorted riffs, and drum & bass technicality."The End Is Growing Near" and "A Letter" are full on traditional Black Metal tracks with the album ending with "The Eulogy" which for me is the best track musically it sounds great, but the vocals were not for me.
"Songs Of Hiraeth" was not my cup of tea, definitely not what I would listen to on a regular basis, the tracks were too long causing me to lose interest..As a music listener I respect Austin Linn's experimentation and there is no doubt he is a talented guy.I liked the "Laurentian Blue" album a lot more than this one which I reviewed previously.Black Metal fans will no doubt love this album.
