tamat
Paint the Sky Red
From Bandcamp, “tamat” is our fourth and final album. It is a word from our native language, Malay, which means “the end,” “completed,” or “finished.” In “tamat,” we bid a heartfelt farewell to our own creative journey with a sense of closure and gratitude. We hope the songs from this album will provide solace to those navigating their own endings and new beginnings. Every journey has its end. Tamat.
The title track is first. There are mostly clean guitar tones, mixed with some distorted riffs that are scarce, and the air of the song is depressive, like you might imaging the end would be. Lamenting and sad, there are many feelings of regret here that build three-fold along the way. “bussorah” is a lengthy ten minute song. Heavy, slow bass notes carry the opening sound, which evolves like a plain green bud into a pretty flower with lots of colors. Strings add to the delicate but beautiful sound here, where hope springs amidst the chill of winter’s grip.
“putri” has ethereal guitar tones that just invoke a feeling of calmness, and peace. It also reminds the listener to stop once in a while and soak in the beauty of life, because there is a lot of it to see if you allow yourself. “nescaya” means “certainly,” or “surely” in English. This gentle offering is as sure of itself as the sun rising each and every morning. Layers are added along the way, building with vocals, until your heart aches with anticipation. “(mim)” has a tone that is warm, unassuming, and inviting. Even when distorted guitars come in, this is a feel good song.
“menyerlah” is a slow and delicate affair, reminding me of a child who gets out of bed for the first time in the morning and saunters to the table for breakfast. The song’s innocence is mostly reflective of that. “sedar” closes the album. It feels to me like a culminating song of good-bye, but also well wishes for your next beginning. It’s like watching a friend leave your neighborhood to move to a big city. You know that you will miss him, but deep down, you wish him well and when you think of him, your heart does ache, but you remember him with nothing but smiles and adoration. “All good things come to an end” the old proverb says. Indeed. This is the band’s swan song, and what a mark they have left in music.
