Abhorrent Worship

Ossuary

Although the album presented evil in material form, too many of the songs sounded nearly alike, and that is my chief complaint.

From Bandcamp, “You find yourself two thousand meters below the earth’s surface surrounded by overwhelming darkness. Cold and wet, the path has collapsed behind you. You have nowhere to go, but still you scream. You scream, and scream, echoing into the darkness, [dissolving] your throat like acid. It’s no use. There’s no way out. You die here. OSSUARY have made this cave for you. They take their time between releases, which shows, and once again “Abhorrent Worship” is worth the wait. Once you press play there’s no going back, accept your fate happily or not. You die here.”

The album has six songs, and “Volitional Entropy” is first. The entering sound is very dark, thick, and low, and the harsh vocals are filthy, throaty utterings. Meaty bass notes provide much of the bottom end bombast. “Inborn Scourge Unbound” has more dissonant guitar chords that noodle around almost as if they are lost, and those throaty vocal utterings continue. At times, they sound tortured, mixed in with feelings of hopelessness. “Forsaken Offerings (To the Doomed Spirit)” is another deep and dark offering that spends much of its time under a cold rock, or amidst the sludge of a swap. The pace finally quickens a bit after the halfway mark, but the riffs remain cold.

“Instinctual Prostration” has another slow but aggressive riff, and the vocals paint a picture of desolation at times, coupled with rage at others. So far, we are four songs in, and there isn’t much in the way of variation. “The Undrownable Howl of Evil” does have evil qualities, indeed. It sounds like the song was written in the Underworld and then brought up to earth by demons. Unfortunately, however, the album is starting to blend together without much diversity. “Barren Lamentation” closes the album. It’s a slow, unnerving sound, and also a long one, but you could interchange the sound with any other on the album.

Although the album presented evil in material form, too many of the songs sounded nearly alike, and that is my chief complaint.
