Ophe - Somnium Nocte Mendaciis album cover

From Bandcamp, "OPHE is insane, OPHE is pure darkness, OPHE is the new sound of the Apocalypse. With their second album "Somnium Nocte Mendaciis," French one-man band presents a malignant, dissonant, sulphurous piece of Post Black Metal that paints the radicalization of the concept of extreme music, the demolition of all boundaries and limits, as in an obscure musical doomsday ready to open you the doors to its universe of suffering. "Somnium Nocte Mendaciis" brings together elements of primordial Black Metal, Post Industrial settings and a strong sense of delirium and pain that accompanies the entire work. The album contains seven tracks.

The short "Tarde" opens the album, at under a minute in length. It brims with dark energy, mostly from keyboards. "Odalisk Incursio Sub Methaqualone," by contrast, is a 12-minute beast. The first few minutes are tense, and cloudy. Out of the darkness comes terrible screams. The music begins to build to a cold and gloomy affair, where no light dare enter. Punishing, dissonant tones swell and thrive. "Squirting Cadaveribus" is a heavier affair of brutal rhythms and deadly vocals. Desperation evolves, as there is nothing pure or scintillant to see here. "Partum Chimerae" begins with spoken words in French, casual in nature, while in the background, a bloody murdering spree is undertaken. Screams from the victims can be heard, while the killer feels nothing.

"Decem Vicibus II" begins with the spoken words of a desperate man. In the background, smooth and almost jovial vocal moans stretch across the song. Soft drums ring out in a repeated pattern as the song builds a little. The tension in the air is so thick, you could cut it with a knife. "Noctis Ames" is another short, one-minute track, consisting of pure chaos and evil. The killer has annihilated everyone in his path and is now seeking new victims. "Fores Vere A Peccatis" closes the album. A heavy, almost Industrial sound provided the backbone for this unforgettable slab of absolutely atrocity. The heavy plate backs off to just drums and steady, long keyboard notes before the vocals return with fervor. The final two minutes are a push to slaughter as many people as possible. Wielding his razor sharp machete, the killer mows down victims and licks the blade clean between killings, with a coy smile.

The end of the world is coming, and it sounds like OPHE. This was a pleasantly dreadful affair with many different genres being crossed and explored. The overall effect was akin to something so foul rising from the depths of hell that one look of its putrid and repellant face would instantly kill you. Take a ride through the nine planes of hell with "Somnium Nocte Mendaciis" and prepare yourself to see things that you didn't think were even possible.
