Drawn Into Descent

Onrust

This was a dreadfully excellent album in every sense of that word. The picture it painted was one of complete loneliness and emptiness. Picture a world where you never meet another human, and you live in an icy cold, snow covered world where the winds keep the temperature at -50 year round. Now picture this as not only somewhere you have to live now, but for eternity. That’s the kind of desolation that the album covers.

Hailing from Belgium, Post Black Metal band ONRUST present their new album here titled "Drawn Into Descent." Four lengthy songs await the listener. "Teloorgang" is first. The opening sound is slow, desperate, and bleak…like something you might encounter at the coming of the end of times. Then, it's energized with a dose of aggressive guitars and vocal screams. There is a stifling cloud of darkness that accompanies the song at every turn, and it seems to grow as the song moves. "Drenkeling" begins with dirty bass guitar notes and an almost jovial jaunt. Don't let it fool you though, because from there, the darkness settles in once again. The electric jaunt, as I call it, drops briefly, and then returns. Talk about desolate…through two songs so far this is one of the most desolate albums I have ever heard.

"Onrust" broods in with atmosphere…the type that just makes you feel alone in the world. It picks up a bit, but those negative feelings remain strong. Aggression bubbles underneath, rattling the very ground that you walk on, until you can see it begin to poke through the rubble. The vocal screams sound like the pleas of a dying man. "Ogen" is the final song, and if you thought it was dark before, now it completely blots out the sun. It moves with a contentious crunch and a "fuck you" type of attitude. The vocals are now pure white hot rage, not just tortured, and the groove it settles into is one of utter destruction and death.
