Oceans - We are not Okay album cover

OCEANS is a Post-Metal/Metalcore band based out of Vienna, Austria, and Berlin, Germany. Formed in 2017, the released their debut full-length in 2020. Now they are back with a four-track EP, titled "We are not Okay." I wasn't able to find much information on the band, because their EPK did not supply a bio sheet, and there is very little information on their Facebook page. So, we are going to have to let the music do the talking here.

"We are not Okay" opens the album. It begins with an ultra-heavy sound...deep guttural vocals and weighted guitars. But the melody opens up in the chorus, with harmonic clean vocals. There is a brutal breakdown towards the end of the song, with aggressive, crunchy guitars and vocals that will swallow you whole. "Everyone I Love is Broken" opens with melancholy tones in both the vocals and the guitars, leading to a full charge of instruments. The spacey elements are actually quite nice and well done. It provides some diversity for the album. Again, much of the melody is in the chorus.

"Voices" begins with some tense tones and light percussion. The vocals are clean at first..."who's that man behind the mirror, I don't know him anymore" he croons. Harsh vocals and a deep punishing sound come next, then clean female vocals. A duet of clean vocals comes in at the chorus. This song is a tale of two opposites...melancholy clean passages with super deep harsh ones. "Shark Tooth" closes the album. It's just over three minutes in length, opening with heavy chords and vocal screams. "This is our symphony; we are about to sew our seed" he repeats several times.

Overall, I enjoyed the album, but it was difficult to rate just four songs. Being signed to the biggest label in heavy metal says something about a band, bit I found the album a bit on the repetitive side. Four songs that are nearly identical in length, with similar patterns, doesn't bring much diversity to the table. Still, it was a good album.
