NO HOPE FOR THE LOST is a project formed and led by musician and audio engineer Nathanael Bohnet. Ran out of Octave Studios in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the band was formed as DEADLIGHTS originally in 2018. After releasing one EP and having Covid-19 cancel all plans for festival appearances and touring, Nathanael and bandmate/producer Re Mayer decided it was time to go back to the drawing board. Thus, starting under the new moniker. Their newest EP contains four tracks.

"Braska" is the opening track, at just one-and-a-half minutes in length. The vocals are a bit pitchy, but that is to be expected from a new, independent band. The bass guitar carries much of the melody here, and just when it starts to take form, it ends. "Yu Yevon" picks up where the previous track leaves off. This time, heavy guitars and harsh vocals abound. Some djenty tones are released in the verses, while clean vocals and some guitar melodies take over in the chorus.

"Yunalesca" is another super-short track, but the melodies are outstanding. There is a thick heavy synth line with clean guitars and piano notes, along with some ethereal singing. It begins to pick up, and segues into "Jecht." The angry vocals and Djent tones are back. It chugs along with some meter shifting until the chorus, where some clean vocals come in. Here is where I might recommend some backing vocals to thicken up the sound, but the song is on fire.

What we basically have here is just two tracks. The other two are so short that it's hard to get a read on the EP as a whole. What impressions I have is that they are trying to make a name for themselves in the Progressive Metalcore album. Though the independent production was a bit rough, and the clean vocals just a bit pitchy, the music was excellent. I think the duo needs to make a hard decision...whether or not to continue on a duo, or expand to more members who can specialize on a particular instrument. I wish them all the best in this decision.
