Pandemonium of Egregores

Mutiilation

Overall, this wasn’t a bad album per se, it just stunk too much of the Black Metal bands of the past. The genre had made great strides over the years, but this band failed to take advantage of the loose boundary structures of today.

From Bandcamp, "Pandemonium of Egregores," the new opus of MUTIILATION, slightly more melodic than its predecessor, will take you on a journey to the borders of death. From rural curses to urban hell, four dark pieces depict Meyhnach's universe and his vision of the world." The album has five songs, and "Overture" is first; a one-and-a-half-minute instrumental opener. It moves fast, and thick, some might even call the sound pure chaos. There are no riffs to grab onto, no vocals, it just swirls in the void like a creature driven to madness. It segues into "Shadows over the Valley," which hits all of the tortured markers of a good Black Metal song. Aggressive, fast, somewhat chaotic, and dark as the night, the sound is as harrowing as it is brutal. "Fifty Winters" gathers the mind-numbing cold of what that might be like into a tight ball that they band just unleashes onto the listener. They paint a picture that is whitewashed in snow and ice, and in depression.

The title track is much more somber affair, and there are also some backing elements that make the sound frightening. The vocals however are just a little flat, if he varied the tone or the pitch a little more, it may make them more effective. "Hashischin Cage" is the final offering on the five-track album, and it's another deeply aggressive and somber song at the same time. Overall, this wasn't a bad album per se, it just stunk too much of the Black Metal bands of the past. The genre had made great strides over the years, but this band failed to take advantage of the loose boundary structures of today.
