Disse Fugle Får Ingen At Se
Morild

In Danish, "Morild" is a word that describes the natural phenomenon of bioluminescent plankton. That was all the information I could find about the band. Their newest effort here titled "Disse Fugle Får Ingen At Se (meaning "these birds will see no one")" has four lengthy songs. "Retten Til Resterne" is first. It has a harrowing opening sequence, with slow drumming, and a haunting background. The full weight of the song then drops, and it's punishingly heavy. The vocals are high-pitched, and scratchy, and they give the song a frightening feeling. Rounding the halfway mark, the sound drops to just clean guitar notes and background ambiance, and that feeling that something is out there is compounded. The aggression comes crashing back, and it sound like utter destruction to me.
"Træt" is just under thirteen minutes, and the sound is hastier. Solemn melodies fill in the cracks in this rich, full sound, and they are glorious. They make my heart ache for more. Rounding the halfway mark, it expands like a balloon over hills, mountains, and valleys, as a darkness approaches. Before it consumes you, it fades back into the distance, and tension remains. Walking slowly towards the end, you can hear swells of emotion rise and fall, and the transitions are seamless. "1000 Kroppe" is another long saga that begins with pure aggression. The drums roll, the riffs are thick, and there is also some melody within the fast-picked guitars and torturous vocals. It swells until the pain is too much to bear, then ducks back into the shadows. Solemn melodies enter again, and my heart jumps a few beats. They make you want to hear them again and again. In a reprieve, desperate, raging tones take over until all that you can see is blackness. Is this the end of the world?
The title track is the final offering, and this 15-minute opus is poised to burn the world. Tentative at first, layers of disease are added. The sound unfolds like the universe in a clear night sky, and you don't know whether to be afraid or in awe. My money is on the former, because the song begins a steady descent downward until you can feel the fires of Hell. Just before the pit unfolds, the door closes, and the heat fades. Frail female vocals enter, and there is a long ending. This was a fantastic album. In modern Black Metal, and boundaries are not nearly as narrow as they were, and MORILD takes full advantage of stretching them. In addition to the trademark aggression, there are also atmospheric passages, even melodies, and they connect everything with a darkness that you just can't shake.
