Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh
Morbific

First feeling when I listen to this album: Carcass,Autopsy,Fluids and General Surgery era. For an old metalhead like me, this is gore death metal, or goregrind. A murky, rotten production overall. Morbific is not new for me. They have a good fan base; there is a lot of late 80s and 90s influences here, and they don't hide it. That is a bit sad, because nothing that I have not heard before. The lyrics are about horror, torture, and death. Morbific has been active since 2020 and has been very active to release albums, EPs, singles, and some split. And a live album back in 2022.
But I head right in to the album, "Smut Club (For the Chosen Scum)," with heavy distorted bass, a down-tuned guitar, and a deep growl, we are back in the 90s goregrind. This kind of music is not made to be split up into sections to analyze. It's more like a sound that comes to hit you hard. If you search for Gene Hogland's , extreme drum patterns, you will not find it here. "Menagerie of Grotesque Trophies" is a track that gets your attention; a lot of rhythm changes, and the trio has actually something going on here. But It's a very uneven album; some tracks have everything you could ask for, and some, a day at the office. A track like "Womb of Deathless Deterioration" will get your attention, while "Crusading Necrotization" make you think of what you should do tomorrow. That is not a good sign. The first five tracks really have something, and then it's like that something fades away. It becomes a bit boring.
But the title track "Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh (A Travesty of Human Anatomy)" is excellent; they maybe should aim more for their own sound and identity and stand out. Instead, to repeat what has been done since the early 90s. As musician, they deliver for this genre, but the right spirit is not always there, much is routine or a day at the office (again). For a genre like this, that has a lot of limitations. Morbific has much to offer, and they have a pretty solid discography behind them. It takes around 10 years to get some attention in this genre :), but Morbific is already there. This album is not their best, but from experience, a goregrind band (death metal), does have ups and downs when they release a new album. And a fun fact: the fans are dedicated...and know that those tracks here on this album, is something totally different when Morbific hit the stage. That's why this genre is so hard to review; they are not studio bands , they are live bands.
