Let Water Flow

Moon Wisdom

Overall, this was a decent listening experience, but I just didn’t get a firm enough handle on their sound through 30 minutes of runtime. I also didn’t hear much in the way of Punk or even Gaze sounds. Had they not mentioned that, I probably wouldn’t be as disappointed as I am.

This lean, 29-minute ritual introduces MOON WISDOM with unrelenting vigor, channeling the raw spirit of black metal's second wave while weaving a current of punk energy and depressive blackgaze. "Let Water Flow" distills its ferocity into seven tracks that surge like a glacial flood, Razor-edged riffs carve through each song, blending the primal fury of early black metal with soaring melodies that linger like mist. Punk-infused rhythms drive the onslaught, while a blackgaze edge adds a haunting, melancholic depth. The album has seven songs, and the short "Intro" is first. The tone that it sets is one of tension and anticipation, because it doesn't let you in completely as to what might come next.

"As Rain" explodes out of the gates with a choppy riff and an aggressive sound, complete with a lead-in vocal scream. I do hear a raw Black Metal sound, but not so much the Punk-infused rhythms nor much Blackgaze. "Ashen Winds" has a bit more of somber tones to go along with the weight of the sound. The rhythms are again fairly choppy, and it rides the fence between anger and depression. "Frozen Soul" is the longest on the album, and here is where I get a piece of some of the Gaze elements, but they aren't sustained. Instead, the song laments with deep feelings…perhaps regret, or other more sentimental longings. I do wish that they could elongate some of these feelings.

"Solitude," despite the title, is a fast mover, and although there are some depressing tones, I don't really get the sense of solitude from the song. There are also some amateur moments akin to the band doing their own production, yet they do have a record label. "Dark Shades" is a song that features more choppy rhythms, and they are unsettling in the sense that you can never let your guard down. The ambient passage approaching the halfway mark is nicely done as well. "Lullaby of Woods" is the final song, and it's a short, "cool-down" from some of the previous aggression. Again, it sports very solemn tones that are mysterious, like the title of the song.

Overall, this was a decent listening experience, but I just didn't get a firm enough handle on their sound through 30 minutes of runtime. I also didn't hear much in the way of Punk or even Gaze sounds. Had they not mentioned that, I probably wouldn't be as disappointed as I am.
