Visions

Mooch

Light your joint.

We have a band from Quebec in Canada that promises some good quality psychedelic Rock. The band is MOOCH and they are a power trio that is releasing their 3rd full length album Visions with a great artwork in the cover. The band starts with some crazy fuzzed riffs ala JIMI HENDRIX on “Hangtime” that is already a nice introduction and has some good energy. All band members are credited as vocals, so may expect some different flavors in that aspect. Slowing down a little, we have “Morning Prayer” that has a whimsical feeling to it and a nice bass line from Julian Iac. However, the distortion does not take long to arrive again with the melody change. Nice backing vocal work and a lot of different moods in the tune. The band surprises even more with a nice acoustic guitar introduction to “Intention” that gives me vibes of MAMAS AND THE PAPAS ! Talk about psychedelics! They really reach that 60’s to 70’s vibes and even add a latin touch on this track.

We go back to the heaviness of it all with “New Door” and you can notice that the band also brings DOORS vibes without the keyboard. One aspect that I love about power trios is the opportunity for every instrument to shine in the arrangement. I could swear that Jim Morrison sang this song. In the middle of the tune, they change it completely to a SANTANA style ending with some great solos from Ben Cornell in a latin rhythm bed provided by drummer (percussionist) Alex Segreti. As you light the second joint we reach “Together" and the trip continues. You will notice that the band goes deep in the exploration of melodies that remit us to bands like LOVE or THE MOODY BLUES in their prime. The album is not Heavy Metal or even Hard Rock in the sound ,but it does not compromise on the creative delivery as you can hear in the album title track “Vision”.

The album has all the flavors of the 60’s and 70’s but it does not lock in a single style as every song reminds you of a different band and sound from that era. I was expecting an overfuzzed, heavy drumming and some screams in every track on this album but this is not the case as it has a lot of soft moments with good vocal harmonics spread all over. The band mixes the acoustic with the heavy on “You Wouldn’t Know” that brings back some distortion but does not lose the main purpose of all the arrangements in this album, to make you trip. We reach the end of our journey with “Reflections” , which has the best arrangement in my opinion. Great instrumental that reminds me of YES and no vocals this time. You can create your own melody and this instrumental track will follow you. Good work from this young band. I believe their concerts should be a nice musical sensorial experience and I look forward to some more of their work in the future. If they add some more heavy guitars here and there, I would not mind.
