MindAheaD - 6119: Part I album cover

MINDAHEAD is a Progressive Metal band from Italy, formed in 2010. Six years since their label debut, they now return with their newest album titled "6119: Part I," which contains nine songs. "Prologue" is the first. It's a short, mood-setting song that hints at what is to come on the album...electronic, dark, and mysterious. "Burning Horizon" is the first proper track. A melodious entrance follows with some tight meter shifts and dual vocals. Much of the song is melancholy, but when the band wants to turn it up, they do. "Dancing in the Desert" is a 17-minute opus. It's a few minutes in before the sound starts. The dual vocal melodies are nice and the sound is ever-changing. They lose me a few times along the way. After the half-way mark, there is a clean passage slow down. Emotive tones carry the song forward, but I must admit, this beast of a song really didn't make much of a mark on me.

"What You Are" is more succinct and heavy, with a heavily accented riff opening the song. These melodies are a bit better developed, with a nice trade-off of vocalists and some meaty bass notes underneath. Both of the vocalists have smooth voices. The moody, ambient moments are well-done. "The Last Tide" is a sweet, emotional number where the melodies are catchy and hook the listener in. The light symphonic elements do a good job of supporting the sound. "Beautiful Mistake" begins with a chorus of vocals followed by some solid lead guitars. Harsh vocals make an entrance. The sound takes a few sharp turns off the path but the melody line continues, and Kyo puts her all into the vocals.

"Innocence" is a short little piano number with a smooth but somewhat dark melody. The pianist does a really good with the melody. The closing two-part movement is called "At the Gates of the Night." The first movement is long. Both vocalists present a strong vocal performance, and the supporting music is charming and pretty. A heavier riff kicks in close to the half way mark and Kyo once again musters all her vocals prowess into some impossibly high notes, followed by lead and keyboard breaks. Thick, Progressive elements are also on full display. The second and final movement is much shorter. It seeks to bring the many different tones on the album to a cohesive whole. Let's get one thing out of the way immediately...the band is full of talent...in the dual vocalists, the guitar work, and the bass and drums...all around really. The approach was very ambitious and they met their mark, but some of the songs meandered a bit and were hard to follow.
