Some years ago I flew to Porto, Portugal and I stayed for some days there. I loved the place, the architecture, and the wines. I love MOONSPELL and PAOK, the football team that I support had a great Portuguese coach and an even greater Portuguese player that played as a winger. But somehow Portuguese as a language sounds so wrong to my ears especially when it is sung in Heavy Metal. I can't manage for some reason but I will try to be as objective as possible in this review.

MIDNIGHT PRIEST play old school Heavy Metal with lyrics in Portuguese and this record is full of old school Heavy Metal influences and I would say that KING DIAMOND and MERCYFUL FATE is their main inspiration but not the only one. Sometimes they overdo it though like the riff in "Cidade Fantasma" which is "The Trooper" intro riff. Musically the record steps on the safe rules and regulations that the fathers of NWOBHM created in the 80s. I have no idea what the lyrics talk about but with some guess (and Google translate help)  the song titles are those that one would expect from a Metal record like "Black Sabbath",  "In the Heat of Hell" and "Ghost Town".

"Midnight Priest" is a record that pays tribute to the old glorious days of Heavy Metal (which most of us love and cherish) but while they do it well this is not enough to make people look back to it. The band shows great skills through the whole record and Priest's voice is great (and reminded a lot of METAL INQUISITOR). The band should do something about their nicknames though - Joe Dalton and Johny Kilmister? Seriously? Does Lemmy know about this? Concerning me I'd rather listen to the old records than try something new if that new thing is just a repetition of old stuff and not something interesting and different. If you love the 80s, you look desperately for such kind of records and you do not mind that you can't make a word then add two extra points to the final grade.
