Dreamless
Midnight Betrothed
MIDNIGHT BETROTHED was started in the Summer of 2020, being another sole project of The Seer (the entity behind various projects on the Atrocity Altar label). The project released a 20-minute demo entitled "To Follow Your Spirit into the Night" on cassette format, showcasing sounds inspired by bands such as FEAR OF ETERNITY and early DIMMU BORGIR. While other of The Seer's keyboard-heavy projects (such as VRORRSATH) focused more on fantastical landscapes with a triumphant undertone, MIDNIGHT BETROTHED was an attempt to harness a more romantic and sombre atmosphere - hence being labelled "Sombre Romantic Black Metal." The album contains six tracks.
"A House in the Distance" opens the album. It's a short two-minute instrumental featuring haunting piano notes, and some background ambiance. "A Snow-Crested Heart" also begins with piano notes, and a harrowing vocalist in the background. The melodies built here are quite charming. "Stop Visiting my Grave" also opens with piano notes and a light-hearted guitar riff. The vocals are juxtaposed with the main melody. It takes some darker turns along the way, harnessing the power of the night. The melodies here are jovial. It's unusual in the genre.
"Bygone Fortunes" begins with a guitar riff but the piano notes are not too far behind. Once it gets going, it is actually a very beautiful sound. Again, the vocals are totally opposite from the music, but somehow it works. "It Was Once Just a Glimpse" is another piano-laden track. The problem at this point is that many of the songs have a similar sound, and the album is beginning to bleed together a bit. It picks up just a bit in sonority towards the end.
"What Quietly Arose in his Soul" is another song that opens with piano...that makes all six tracks starting the same way. From there, it is another repetitive sound, very similar to the other five tracks. Piano is the main medium on the album, as it is heavily present in every track. The main problem with the album is that too many of the songs sound the same. The melodies are quite pretty, but too much of the same thing over and over bog down the album.
