Broken Mind
Meteora

METEORA hailing from Budapest, Hungary were formed in 2010. The symphonic Metal band released three full-length albums and two EP so far. Their third EP "Broken Mind" is already the second release in 2025 and has a length of about 22 minutes. It was released via Hungarian Metal specialists H-Music. The EP starts fast and furious with the title track, introduced by powerful guitar riffing, double-bass drumming, and the piano being the most prominent players of the opening sequences. The track develops into a constant switching between fast tempo and mid-tempo. Likewise, there are twists and turns between crushing and thunderous guitar parts and a more melodic approach. The vocals are mainly the female clean vocals, varying between the medium to higher end of the vocal range. However, there are a few parts with male growls around the medium end of the guttural range. Overall, the song sounds a bit too hectic with the many turnarounds. "Broken Mind" was released as video, and the YouTube link is provided below. "Morningstar" starts with the guitars and prominent orchestral arrangements, driven by the strings at a measured tempo leading into the verse part. The verse parts are quiet and led by the female vocals and the piano, while the choruses are driven by powerful guitar riffs and prominent orchestrations. Also, "Morningstar" undergoes many changes in song texture, the track has quiet parts and crushing Death Metal parts, driven by the growls. The orchestral arrangements keep the track together, even though it is not always easy to follow.
"Elysion" is introduced by thunderous guitar riffs and the orchestral arrangements led by the strings. The melodies are grim. The vocals are male clean vocals around the medium end of the vocal range with tonal shifts going in both directions. The orchestral arrangements are very prominent, and all players are used: the strings, the brass, and the piano. The break offers a contributing lead guitar solo and a keyboard solo as well. During the break, the song becomes heavier in terms of the riffing. While the first two songs were a bit too complex at times, "Elysion" uses a simple song structure, and this is beneficial for the track. It is perhaps the darkest song of the release. "In My Name" starts as a quiet song and with the male clean vocals, however, it does not take long to develop a track that uses the full orchestra, devastating guitar riffs, and the double-bass drumming at fast pace. In terms of vocal contributions, male and female vocals alternate and the more the song progresses, the more prominent the growling vocals become. It is, once again, a track using the full range of pace with plenty of twists and turns. There are also some epic parts driven by the choir. "In My Name" is a very close interpretation of symphonic Death Metal, and no doubt, my favourite of the EP.
When I did the review of METEORAs previous release "In This Silence", I pointed out to the genre twists within the songs. In "Broken Mind" this is even more pronounced, and I felt often reminded on the sound of Dutch symphonic Death Metal outfit MAYAN. In fact, key feature of the EP is the symbiosis of symphonic Metal and Death Metal, the mixture of melodic parts and crushing parts. All those changes in sound and song structures are very well kept together by the well-thought use of orchestral elements. The EP is well produced. "Broken Mind" may miss the catchiness of typical symphonic Metal releases, but the sound offers well-composed symphonic Metal and symphonic Death Metal tracks for fans who love genre twists.
