We've been waiting a short while - seven years to be exact - for Florida-based death metal legends MASSACRE to deliver another unconsecrated offering of OSDM brilliance, in the form of the full-length "Resurgence". A name oh so synonymous with traditional death metal genius, that was actually established in 1986, MASSACRE last released an LP back in 2014. With a few *ahem* trials and tribulations along the way, with more dirty laundry and drama than a gathering of incontinent nans could produce and shake a stick at, today's MASSACRE stands as the crème de la crème of the death metal realms, with an outstanding line-up of OSDM masters.

Two death metal beasts from the original MASSACRE line-up, in the form of the inimitable Kam Lee and bass whizz Mike Borders, stand as the solid foundation of this meaty machine, with some serious talent and virtuosity upholding the band in the form of a trifecta of guitarists Rogga Johansson (MEGASCAVENGER, RIB SPREADER), Johnny Petterson (WOMBBATH), Scott Fairfax (MEMORIAM, AS THE WORLD DIES), and Brynjar Helgetun (CRYPTICUS) with his ability to pulvarise. What these guys don't know about producing a dirty hunk of death isn't worth knowing; I mean, we're positively spoilt, salivating at the prospect of such an erotic line-up, with the promise of the sextet's musical muck. Frankly, with such a "supergroup" on our hands, I have a feeling we're going to be very impressed with the collective talents this assemblage brings to the slab.

MASSACRE's literal revival in "Resurgence" is a delectable collection of rejuvenated, noticeably mature sounding tracks, and a rebirth of magnitude that still retains all the formulaic old school death metal genius of earlier releases. The record serves up ten macabrely Lovecraftian-inspired cuts that vary from mid to fast-paced, offering all the sonic slaughter and aural bludgeoning your dark heart could wish for, wrapped up with musicianship that is above reproach. "Eldritch Prophecy" opens this phenomenal full-length with a minacious and brooding aspect that breaks into a pulverising piece of wonder with Kam's distinctive, meaty growls tearing through you and the rhythm section offering bloody bludgeoning. It's a solid, boisterous intro to a deliciously, deadly crypt of cuts and gothic tales of terror.

"Ruins of R'lyeh" wastes no time with its aural assault, opting for a fast-paced tempo, with well-placed temporal switches along the way, that don't compromise the menace of this track. There's plenty of grooves that grind and the guitars sear through the heady bass line, with a sinister, moreish output. "The Innsmouth Strain" cudgels your ears from the get-go with its barbarous, ravaging riffs of brutality, with the likes of "Whisperer in Darkness" continuing the onslaught of bludgeoning with double kick drums aplenty and guttural growls spawned from the pits of the bowels, eviscerating with bestial guitar lines.

MASSACRE deliver fistfuls of atmospheric aspects in "Resurgence" with equal measure of torment. With the haunting screams and literal chainsaw effects in "Book of the Dead (Necronomicon Ex Mortis)", you're at the forefront of a bloody massacre. Passages of unnerve unfurl steadily and vocal dominance is exploited to the fullest, with riffs set to maim and next-level brutality expertly wielded in your face. "Into the Far-Off Void" draws you into abyssal depths once more and has you at the helm of MASSACRE's blood-fuelled renaissance, with "Servants of Discord" serving up chugs of dissonance and melodic aspects to get your teeth stuck into with a haunting, marching drumbeat to perfectly wrap up its warped ways.

The last section of "Resurgence" harks to even deadlier soundscapes, with true pulverising ensuing in synergistic guitar fashion in "Fate of the Elder Gods" with moments of clean solo guitar lines to cleanse the palate. An infernal, furious rage pounds in double kick drums of magnitude in "Spawn of the Succubus" with a deadly, cumbersome riffs that maliciously tears through, complimenting the spew of Kam's inhuman growls. And, last, but not least, the nod to familiar bygone MASSACRE days in "Return of the Corpse Grinder", a jarring, insidious masterstroke addition to aptly bookend this sinister showpiece.

Listening to "Resurgence", you'll be tachycardic from start to finish, or at the very least, on the cusp of a pulmonary. MASSACRE's latest release doesn't disappoint, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice to add to your collection, especially for the pounding ear worms that reside in each cadaverous-laced cut on this deadly full-length. This is a record literally to die for and available from 22^nd October to get your grubby mitts on.
