Trolddom

Lysabaerer

Overall, this was a very enjoyable album. In the rich history of Black Metal, it doesn’t depart too far from the original genre boundaries, so it should please fans of tradition. At the same time, it explores just enough unchartered territory so that it stays fresh, and modern. Bravo.

From Bandcamp, "A peculiar blend of melancholy, darkness, grandiosity, and cosmic chaos defines the universe of LYSABAERER. They delve into themes of fear, mistrust, and farewell, all intertwined in massive walls of sound. The music is crafted with the intention to process emotions and fight battles, both internal and external, expressed in lyrics and echoed in the music." The duo hails from Denmark. The album has five songs, and "En afsked" is first. Entering with somber tones and clean guitars, the weight grows wearier as the song continues, to the point that it becomes this massive rock on your back that you have to carry everywhere. "i månens blanke skær" is an eleven-minute opus, and the tones are firmer as well as angrier. Thick bass notes combine with massive drum strikes to hold down the bottom end, while the vocals rage over heavy, distorted riffs.

"med formløs væren" is shorter, and her comes some of that grandiosity the band talked about. For me, it's reminiscent of gazing up at the stars on a clear, cool night, wrapped in the comfort of a blanket with only a sense of wonder on your tongue. "forsonet gennem røgens slør" swings the sound back to heavy aggressions, and this 10-minute plate is full of both rage and despair. Approaching the halfway mark, much of the rage drops, but it returns soon enough, with a renewed vigor. "fra aske til intet." is the final song, and also the longest. The melodic, melancholy opening sequence gives the listener a chance to pause from some of the earlier aggression, but it segues into another hardened plate of contention soon enough. From there, it's an ugly combination of aggression and despair, and an ebb and flow between the two.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable album. In the rich history of Black Metal, it doesn't depart too far from the original genre boundaries, so it should please fans of tradition. At the same time, it explores just enough unchartered territory so that it stays fresh, and modern. Bravo.
