Leaving the Fragile Space
Lunar Mercia
Post-Black Metal trio LUNAR MERCIA formed in Birmingham, UK, in 2018. This is their debut full-length album, which has four songs. "On the Veiled Road" is the first. At first, the opening riff is pretty straightforward, but it segues into a bit of a lighter sound with dreamy, melodic vocals. Then, they take a harsh turn with more instrumental sonority. Gloomy, desperate sound follow, with the vocal notes extended at the end for emphasis. A sharp transition occurs at the half-way mark, to charming, soft, and beautiful tones. Distorted guitars return, but the melody remains. There is then a long fade-out.
"Sombre Corruption" begins with another fairly heavy riff but nothing too aggressive. Like the previous song, the first thing we hear from the vocals are dreamy cleans. Approaching the half-way mark, the riff grows darker, but the pretty melodies hang on. Harsh tones eventually wash out much of the melody, but the transitions are very sharp and unexpected. Towards the end, both styles work better together. "The Loss" is a short little song with very alluring sounds from a simple but effective guitar melody and clean, harmonized vocals. The song is about loss, and the sad tones tug at your heart.
"Leaving the Fragile Space" closes the album. The opening tones are warm, and soothing. I could ride this wave for days. A distorted riff enters but the charming melody line continues. Harsh vocals come in closer to the half-way point, but again, right in line with the opening melody. This song has better transitions than the first two. Coming out of the half-way mark, a different melody develops amidst the doomy, tortured harsh vocals. This was a lovely song. Overall, this is a promising debut from a band that knows how to combine aggressive techniques with beautiful ones. Although the transitions in the first two songs were a bit harsh, they figured it out afterwards.
