A psychedelic doom hellscape is abound on Lord Drunkalot's debut album "Heads & Spirits". Right off the bat I knew how I would feel about this album and I struggled to listen the whole way through. Lyrics in "2+2=3" include "One and one and one is four, yeah" That's that Beatles math right there. Yes, it was the vocals and lyrics that sullied my good doomy time with this. I think the vocals are best when Ganjalf The Black is screaming rather than singing. The solo at the end of "Sun Demons" helps break away from the repetitive sound heard so far. This eventually became a complaint of mine throughout the album.

The most notable song is the title track "Heads & Spirits." The opening riff is pretty cool and has a Southern metal feel to it that I like. This song shows off the guitar skill a lot more. This song gets weird, however, because about five minutes in this funky cool, almost jazzy guitar and drum part starts happening, with some really interesting guitar work at minute seven. And this instrumental goes on for the rest of this almost 10-minute song. It becomes almost a completely different song - I actually thought track four had begun until I looked.

"Blåkulla" goes back into the doomy side of things. This album is full of devil and hell imagery and I'm pretty sure at one point in this song I heard the lyrics "orgy with a beast." I could be wrong. I don't think any of this shocks me with a name like Lord Drunkalot. The band describes themselves on their Facebook as "Stoned slavic boozers exploring vast psychedelic wastelands of heavy music." This is honestly a perfect description of their sound.

Again, the guitars at the end of this song shine the most on "Blåkulla". That's one of the few good things I can say about this album is that the guitar playing has some great moments. When the songs go into an instrumental section or guitar solo that's when it really sounds cool and breaks from the repetitiveness. I really like the beginning of "Witchfucker." This song probably stands out the most from the rest of the album. I thought it was cool that the vocalist screamed "Witch!' after singing the initial verse, it added some cool structure to the song. Of course, instrumentally is where this band shines and this song is no different from the rest in that respect.

My main issue with the album is the vocals. They're just not pleasing to my ear in any way and they kind of drown out the music. It's like a bad mix of Rob Zombie and Zakk Wylde. Overall, the most memorable thing about this is the band's name.
