Archees Legeones

Lloth

Overall, this was a solid album that intermixed a few different genres with the band’s signature style, which for me was an old school Celtic style that reminded me of the great battles of the Scotts and the British. It’s also a fitting tribute to the former founder, Tristessa, may he rest in peace.

LLOTH reunited with new members in 2003, occasionally performing live until pausing again the following year. The band was activated again in the summer of 2013 and began to prepare for a new record (which was more in a melodic death/black metal direction). Soon after this, however, the project was put on hold due to Tristessa's illness. In September 2014 the band announced that they would be releasing a new album to commemorate Tristessa, incorporating a "T" into the new logo to honor her memory and legacy. Lloth (also spelled "Lolth") is a spider-themed goddess of the dark elves in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.”

The album has ten songs, and “Angel Wings” is first. To me, it sounds more like an amalgam of Melodeath and Thrash Metal, with some seasonings of Black Metal. Some melody also makes an appearance in the chorus, and it gives the song an updated edge. “Acherodas” sounds like a marching sound to war, where all of the undead armies gather to create destruction on earth. Clean vocals and bagpipes also mix in, giving the song a 12th century Scottish feeling to it. “Dark Mountain” has a slower pace, as well as some solemn feelings. The vocals present another war charge for me. Being a former D&D head, I remember the module they reference, and it fits right in with the music.

“Paianas” Features acoustic guitar rhythms, and well as a ritualistic feeling from the vocal chants, and the bagpipes again solidify these feelings. It reminds me of a portal that can take you back in the time of the Celts. “Arise” is much more in your face, with a deep and aggressive offering that also has some nice guitar melodies. It sounds like an anthem…”rise, and take control of your life,” he states emphatically. “Mother” has ominous bell strikes, and a slow moving pace, again with clean vocals. They might be talking about the “mother land,” or the place where they were raised…in reverence. “Black Throne” still has those anthemic and ritualistic qualities, but it is done with the rawness of harsh vocals, and rage.

“Doomed Black Years” brings the album to a close, with more stalwart statements in the clean vocals, and perhaps a bit of Doom thrown in as well. Overall, this was a solid album that intermixed a few different genres with the band’s signature style, which for me was an old school Celtic style that reminded me of the great battles of the Scotts and the British. It’s also a fitting tribute to the former founder, Tristessa, may he rest in peace.
