Light Beneath
Light Beneath

From Bandcamp, "LIGHT BENEATH" is a fresh Post-Metal band from Tampere, Finland, founded in 2018. The band started to take its own form when all four of its members started to combine unique ingredients of their beloved art of music. There was an oppressive atmosphere, mutual instinct-like drive and passion to create something new. They mix Post-Metal and Black Metal to a unique musical union." The album contains six tracks.
"Beneath Water" leads off the album. Opening with clean guitars, it soon segues into a hard driving and slow riff with harsh vocals, complete with snipets of melody. The vocals are the star of the show. At the half-way mark, clean tones return, but it segues back to an almost doomy sound. "Sirens" also begins with clean and doleful guitars with a bit of dissonance. They begin to build in layers of desolation, until the main riff drops...heavy and lumbering. The sheer weight of their despair could crush your bones into ash. Seguing into "All These Faces," the pace hastens, as does the hatred and oppression. As the vocals settle, clean guitars and drums build this nifty little rhythm. The vocals return with an unbridled vengeance.
"Ravens" opens with more clean guitars but vile harsh vocals that speak of unimaginative horrors. The sound darkens pretty quickly as an impending thunderstorm descends on the wide open plans of a Midwestern town. The cleans are almost jovial within the context of hate that the harsh vocals bring...almost. "3/4" also opens with sobering clean guitars, like the blues following a day of high venture the night before. The harsh vocals are a little more subdued, and the Post elements are allowed to develop more. It gets progressively worse until a pile-driving riff takes over the steering at the half-way mark, grinding the sound into the ground.
"Redivivus" closes the album. Beginning with more clean guitars, you think that you finally see the horizon after what seems like weeks of walking in the cold tundra. But of course, it's a false vision, and the clutches of the cold will not let you escape. Here we have a tale of two sounds...the first being the clean guitars which hold back the fury of the harsher elements like a pile of sandbags trying to hold back the tsunami. There is something familiar about the way the cleans are played...I get a bit of a U2 vibe from the way they fill the bars of the songs. The harsher elements however are played with absolutely devastation and agony. The parable is like the dichotomy of life in many ways. This dark thunderhead will linger for a while.
