Lifeless - Godconstruct album cover

Do you miss the old days when melodic Death Metal meant bands like: EUCHARIST, GATES OF ISHTAR and UNANIMATED? Do you think that only the Scandinavian bands of the late 80s and early 90s played true Death Metal? In other words does your hair stands up every time you hear the legendary ENTOMBED and DISMEMBER distortion on the guitars? If you answered: "Fuck yeah!!" in all the above then LIFELESS is here for you.

The band from Germany comes back five years after the release of their debut, self-released album "Beyond The Threshold of Death" and now with "Godconstruct" (released by F.D.A. Rekotz) bring forth sonic waves of the Swedish Death Metal scene of the 90s. The twelve songs of the album (actually ten, including an intro and an interlude) are quite similar to the works of DISMEMBER, balancing between different tempos, heavy distortion, epic groove and melodic parts.

The overall quality of the album is kept at a really high level, with some songs being a bit more upbeat and aggressive for instance tracks like "Towards Damnation", "Reconquering The Soul" and "Blindead" while in other cases the main focus is the groove, like for example in "Moribund" and that hymn that is "Blood For The Gods". That is the good thing that the album in general manages to retain interesting not with weird twists but simply with good songwriting and equally impressive musicianship. Songs like "The Truth Revealed" and "Sworn To Death" with its almost Von-Drunen-esque vocals reveal a band that definitely has a lot of potential.

My only two problems with the album were that at some point I felt that some of the melodies on the guitars were overdoing it, for instance the title track "Godconstruct" gave me an impression that the lead on the guitar was going on for a bit longer than it should, same thing happened in some other instances. Although definitely not a deal breaker, I just prepare fewer melodies on the old school Scandinavian death metal sound. Apart from that I thought that some of the samples in the albums are a bit unnecessary. Do not get me wrong I am all for samples, I do think that they help build a certain ambiance but they should be used in some moderation.

Still "Godconstruct" is a very good album, solid and honest. This is a band that you should definitely check if you want to call yourself a Death Metal fan.
