Neptune Blue
Lana Lane
Lana Lane is an accomplished rock vocalist with a long history of albums and tours. Born in Concord, California to a musical family, Lana grew up with a balanced diet of both rock music and big band swing music. Since music was always in the house, singing came very naturally to Lana, and she started singing in bands straight out of high school. To forward her career, Lana moved to Los Angeles in the late 80s where she met her husband/producer Erik Norlander. She presents her 11th studio album here titled "Neptune Blue," which contains eleven tracks.
"Remember Me" leads off the album. It opens with copious amounts of keyboards, seguing into an 80's and Lana's vocals. The chorus is somewhat catchy but falls short of any major impacts. "Under the Big Sky" also begins with keys and is a slower, more emotional song. The chorus is lackluster and again fails to make any real impact. So far, Lana's vocal range is not very impressive either. "Really Actually" is another slower number with odd riffs in the chorus and so far the album sounds quite uninspired. Keyboards are used liberally here but again the song doesn't have much dynamism.
"Come Lift me Up" begins with clean acoustical guitars and some somber elements. Some emotional elements are present in the chorus, but do not stand out from the rest of the song. "Bring it on Home" is a mid-tempo song with an elementary riff. Through five tracks so far, the album fails on many levels. We'll get to that in the synopsis at the end. "Lady Mondegreen" features a faster moving song that swings with melancholy elements. The guitar solo here is about an average offering that doesn't stand out at all. She really need to kick this album in the rear. "Someone Like You" is yet another softer moving song. At this point, I am not sure if I would even call this AOR, but that is neither here nor there. The title track closes the album, and it's an eight-minute offering. I have to ask...do we really need an eight-minute song with the same sound? I will let you answer that for yourself.
Unfortunately, the album suffers greatly from a lack of dynamism. For an AOR album, there should be big swells and poignant moments that stand out from the rest of the album, particularly in the chorus. Nothing against Lana's vocals, but they are average at best. She is apparently limited by her inability to negotiate the upper ranges, so her alto voice remains in the same range throughout the album. The album is well produced but that is about all I can really say that is good about it...nothing impressive here at all.
